I agree with your point of view. I always take the song as the litany of a hitchhiking drifter who puts on the face of humility...but really feels superior. So he might say that he hasn't 'done right by you', but that isn't how he feels. I like the grittier lyrics, which are usually Hunter's domain, but Barlow can get serious on occasion.

This really is a good song on many levels in terms of capturing broke down, broken hearted, lost young male that doesn't know what to do with himself except there is still some grit and hope left. He's obviously made some sort of self affirming choice with the "I'm turning around..."
Again, I feel like I could identify with that at least once in my life...
